My go to recipe for steel cut oats. Comes out perfect every time. Recipe is well put together with pictures, step-by-step instructions and variations to the recipe. Kudos!

I've made steel oats a few times on the stove. I felt I never got it quite right. I did this recipe this morning. When I first opened the instant pot, I thought they didn't cook long enough. Then I realized these are ready to serve - no additional milk needed. I was amazed. I loved the oats done this way. I just added some raw sugar and cut up strawberries. I did get the stainless steel bowl that was recommended and it worked great. This is definitely the only way I am making steel oats in the future.

I just got my Instant Pot for Christmas. So far, I think my favorite things to make in it are oatmeal and risotto. This is a good base recipe on how to make steel cut oats with some dairy. I added dried cherries and dates, and frozen blueberries. It came out perfect. This version takes more time and patience than the rolled oats, so it’ll be saved for weekend mornings. I liked both versions just fine.

Hi Loretta! I would not recommend it as the liquid ratio may need to be adjusted as well and I can not advise you on that without working it on it myself.

Did you forget to put the water in the inner pot (under the rack)?

"BURN" notice. Why am I having problems and what can I do?

Hi Rose. You can not use pot-in-pot method for this large of a batch. Instead, I would pour 9 cups of water into the instant pot and then stir in 3 cups of steel-cut oats, a dash of salt, and up to 3/4 cup ground flaxseed if desired. Cook for 6 minutes on high pressure with natural release and you will have perfect oats. Enjoy!

I would like to make 12 servings of 1/2 cooked steel oats in my new IP 8qt duo nova. How do I determine the ratio of oats and water? And how long and setting. I'm a bit overwhelmed and afraid to have a major mess.

Hi Christina! This is very true, a stainless steel bowl does take a shorter amount of time to cook than a glass bowl. I have that noted in my other recipes, I will add to recipe card now. That said, pyrex has stated that it is no longer safe for the Instant Pot, so I do suggest using stainless steel oats. And yes, everyone prefers different textures to their oats.

I just thought worth mentioning for people just starting I was quite surprised that mine had barely cooked in the time mentioned but you at least gave me a starting point and there's very little info on pip cooking so thank you so much.
Maybe some day soon we'll see more recipes using pip to help us beginners figure out what to start pairing to cook.
thank you, christina have a wonderful day and a mindful morning
