What is Seasoned Salt?
Seasoned salt is an all-purpose seasoning made with a blend of dried seasonings and salt used to add flavor to savory dishes.
In fact, many restaurants use seasoning salt in place of plain salt because it truly does add more dimension and flavor to a dish, leaving your taste buds craving more.
While you can purchase seasoned salt, such as Lawry's Season Salt, homemade is the way to go!
why you will love this homemade version
- Quality Control. Store-bought seasoning salt is not made up of simply salt and other dried spices. Most brands also contain preservatives, monosodium glutamate, and corn syrup solids--not exactly additives I want to be sprinkling on my food.
- Adds Flavor. Seasoned Salt adds an extra layer of dimension and flavor to endless savory dishes, from seasoning meat, fish, or vegetables, it really enhances a dish much more than salt alone.
- Allergy-Friendly. This recipe for Homemade Seasoned Salt is gluten-free and made without added MSG, sugar, or cornstarch.
- Made with Simple Ingredients. You likely have the ingredients on hand right now in our spice cabinet to make this seasoning blend and it will cost you pennies to make!
Ingredients in Seasoned Salt

- Salt: Use kosher salt or table salt. I personally prefer kosher salt when cooking, but either will work for this spice blend.
- Garlic Powder & Onion Powder: Add classic savory notes to this homemade blend.
- Pepper: Use black pepper, not white or red pepper for authentic flavor.
- Dried Parsley: The dried parsley adds a nice fresh flavor to the seasoned salt.
- Paprika: For best results use regular, not smoked paprika. While I love smoked paprika, it can quickly overwhelm this simple all-purpose seasoning blend.
- Chili Powder: Use regular, not ancho chili powder. The chili powder may seem like an odd addition, but it adds just enough kick to make your palate wake up and enhances the flavor of the dish.
∗ important to remember ∗
For optimum flavor, be sure you use dried herbs that are no more than 6 months old. As spices sit in the pantry, they begin to lose their flavor.
How to Make Homemade Seasoned Salt
Seasoned salt, well really any spice blend, is literally one of the easiest things you can make.
You simply need to combine the salt, paprika, chili powder, onion powder, garlic powder, parsley, and pepper in a small bowl until the spices are well combined.
Storage Instructions
Any homemade spice blend should be stored in a cool, dark pantry with a tight-fitting lid. This will prevent the spice blend from being permeated with other flavors and keeps the moisture out of the spice blend.
Seasoned Salt will last up to 6 months in the pantry. It is safe to consume after 6 months, but the spices will begin to lose their potency, so the spice blend will not be as flavorful.
Low-Sodium Option
If you are on a low-sodium or sodium-free diet, simply reduce or omit the salt for a homemade salt-free all-purpose seasoning blend (AKA Mrs. Dash Seasoning Blend.)
How to Use Seasoned Salt
This seasoning salt can be used in place of salt in just about any savory dish to help enhance the natural flavors in the recipe. I love using it to season popcorn, french fries, meat, vegetables, and salads. Below are a few of my favorite suggestions for using this recipe for homemade season salt.
- Use seasoned salt to flavor the breading in Baked Chicken Tenders or Homemade Fish Sticks, for an incredible layer of flavor.
- Sprinkle seasoned salt over a whole chicken to make Instant Pot Whole Chicken or Homemade Rotisserie Chicken.
- Use in place of cajun seasoning in recipes like Instant Pot Sausage and Potatoes and Mahi Mahi for a milder, flavorful result.
- Season a pot roast, pork roast, shrimp, or steak with seasoned salt prior to cooking to add a nice flavor profile to your meat.
- Replace salt with this Homemade Seasoned Salt to impart flavor to roasted vegetables, in recipes like Roasted Broccoli or Roasted Brussels Sprouts.
- Give your potatoes more flavor by replacing the salt with homemade seasoned salt in recipes such as Roasted Red Potatoes, Baked Fries, or Air Fryer Potatoes.
- Use the seasoned salt blend to season a breakfast hash or scrambled eggs.
- My recipes for Broccoli Cheese Soup, Homemade Hamburger Helper, and Ham and Bean Soup all call for using seasoned salt, as it adds a layer of dimension to the final dishes.

This is really a fantastic blend and easy to throw together. A great alternative to store bought. I've gone through so much of it already!

Thanks for sharing Gina! I am glad you are enjoying it!

I just love your gluten free seasoned salt! I have had several requests from family and friends as to what seasonings I have used in several dishes!!! I do not add any salt to my mixture so I can add salt as needed.
Lorna
Needed some seasoned salt for a recipe I was making (salmon salad) and found this. Only made 1/2 recipe and I’m glad I did. It makes quite a bit especially if you only need a little. I used regular organic paprika and an organic chili powder I had. It looks very different from my normal seasoned salt and was relieved to find that this does not have sugar in the recipe. Don’t feel that sugar is necessary. The salmon salad turned out great! The seasoning was very good for this. Thank you for posting this recipe!

I am so glad you found this recipe Lorna and that you found the flavor to be spot on. Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment 🙂

Very tasty. I made this to make a dairy-free version of your cream of chicken soup and I was so pleased with both. Thank you!
Kristen Chidsey
So happy to hear you enjoyed JT! Thanks for sharing.

I love this seasoned salt. I put it in my biscuits and gravy and it's perfect!
Rachel
Doesn't seasoned salt usually have a bit of sugar? Brown? White?
Kristen Chidsey
Hi Rachel! Store-bought blends may have a bit of sugar but the advantage of making at home is you can control the ingredients. I don't find the added sugar to be necessary.
Phelicia
Hi Kristen! I am so sorry but this is probably THE worse tasting seasoned salt I've ever had. I wouldn't even call it seasoned salt as it doesn't taste anything like it. I almost gagged when I tried it and my mouth felt like it was on fire, way 2 hot (heat) 4 my liking. I dont ever recall seasoned salt having both paprika and chili powder, infact I used half of each of those from what u called for and it was horrible. I'm not sure what I did wrong as I followed the rest of the ingredients to a T except for those 2. Any insight would be appreciative. Thank u and again I apologize.
Kristen Chidsey
Hi Phelicia! I hate hearing you disliked this so much. Is there any chance you used Cayenne or smoked or chipotle chili powder or smoked paprika? I know chili powder is not in all recipes or blends of seasoned salt, but I have found that just a bit adds some dimension. But this should not be hot to the taste in any way.
Andrew
Hey this looks great! I was looking at the nutritions for this and it says 2kcal. What is kcal?
Kristen Chidsey
Kcal actually means calories--it can be confusing. 😊
Shannon
Thank you for the DIY Seasoned Salt recipe! I'll have to make this with me just being diagnosed with hypertension
Kristen Chidsey
You are so welcome Shannon! I am glad you found this substitute. Best of luck with you health and diet changes as well.

Can I use Oregano instead of Parsley?
Kristen Chidsey
Hi Sarah! I love adding oregano to just about everything, but it is a lot stronger than parsley. I would only suggest using 1-2 teaspoons of oregano.
Katy
Nice balanced seasoning for jojo potatoes!

So glad you enjoyed! It is great on so many things.
