Notes On Ingredients
- Quinoa: The method for cooking quinoa using the Instant Pot will work with any color/variety of quinoa you have on hand. It typically can be found as white quinoa, red quinoa, or tri-color.
- Liquid: To cook the quinoa, you can use water, broth, or stock. If using quinoa for meal prep and a variety of dishes, I recommend keeping it simple and using water. To add a bit of flavor, use store-bought or homemade vegetable broth, homemade chicken stock, or Instant Pot chicken stock.
- Seasonings: You can add in whatever seasonings you like when preparing quinoa. I typically opt to just use a pinch of salt, so that I can use the quinoa as desired in a variety of recipes, but feel free to add in taco seasoning, cajun seasoning, or dill seasoning for additional flavor.
Tips for Perfect Instant Pot Quinoa
The following tips are provided to help you achieve perfect results. You will find the detailed instructions in the recipe card at the bottom of this post.
Tip #1: Rinse Quinoa. It is crucial to rinse your quinoa before cooking it, regardless of the cooking method used. Rinsing removes quinoa's natural coating, called saponin, which can make the quinoa taste bitter. Even if your quinoa states it is pre-rinsed, I would highly recommend placing the quinoa into a fine-mesh strainer and rinsing under cold, running water for at least 2 minutes, or until the water runs clear.

Tip #2: Use a 1:1 Ratio. Cooking quinoa in the pressure cooker requires a 1:1 ratio. Meaning, you use the same ratio of quinoa to liquid. So for 1 cup of quinoa, you would use 1 cup of liquid, for 2 cups of quinoa, use 2 cups of liquid, and so forth.
Tip #3: Let Pressure Release Naturally. Just like when pressure cooking Instant Pot Jasmine Rice and Instant Pot Beans, you need to allow the pressure to release naturally on its own when making Instant Pot Quinoa, as this will ensure your quinoa is perfectly cooked and remains fluffy.
Tip #4: Use a Fork to Fluff. This will help keep the quinoa fluffy and light, verses mushy and dense.

So fast, super nutrious and easy, you have to wonder WHY I didn't cook like this sooner. This is faster than fast food! 1 min cooking quinoa ( not including NR time*)! 2min cooking chicken. Crazy!
*The natural release took 15 min for my 2 cups of quinoa, to which I added a cup of Bullet blended raw carrots. This gave a sweet, crunch.

Perfect results! I made two cups with water and 2 tsp salt free seasoning. I didn’t rinse the quinoa because the packaging said it was already triple rinsed. I did stir it well with the water before closing up the IP lid. Once done, I spread the quinoa onto a wax paper covered cookie sheet and stuck in the freezer. Once froze, I will put into meal size containers in my freezer. Done and delicious!

Perfection! The 2 minute rinse of the key. Thank you SO much for this recipe!

Hi Kristen,
I usually do quinoa (red or mixed) on the stovetop with milk for breakfast - then add fruit/nuts/yogurt.
Do you think this would work in the instant pot - with milk? I might give it a try.
Thanks!
Kristen Chidsey
Hi Lynda! I would not recommend cooking with milk in the inner pot, as it will burn. You can combine your quinoa with milk in heat safe pot and place that on a trivet over 1.5 cups of cold tap water in the inner pot. Cook for 5 minutes on high pressure with a full natural pressure release (you need extra time to account for the dish!) Enjoy!
Lynda
Thank you, I’ll give it a try!

Can you cook this with chicken in it?
Kristen Chidsey
Unfortunately, no. Chicken and Quinoa have different cooking times.

I followed the directions, but I got a "burn" message before it got up to full pressure. I did a quick release and some of the quinoa had burned on the bottom. Not sure where I went wrong. It did seem like it was taking quite a bit of time to get up to pressure. Any suggestions?
Kristen Chidsey
It sounds like your instant pot lid was not sealed. Maybe the seal on the lid was not on correctly or your vent knob was opened. This should only take a few minutes to reach pressure and if not sealed right, the liquid would evaporate and cause a burn notice.

I love this! Thank you so much.
I make Quinoa “Sausages” and this makes it so much faster.
I added a vegetable stock pot into the water and it came out great.
Thanks again.
