What You Need to Make a Berry Smoothie
You really only need frozen berries and juice to make a delicious, creamy berry smoothie. But I often like to jazz up the flavor and boost the nutrients with optional additions. Pick and choose as you like!
- 100% Fruit Juice: I love using bold, sweet pomegranate juice as the base in this berry smoothie, as it is not only naturally swets key to adding flavor and sweetness to this berry smoothie. other good options would be 100% grape juice or 100% apple juice.
- Berries: For this smoothie, I find that frozen berries are best, as they will help the smoothie to become thick and creamy. You can use any blend of berries you like. smoothie. Blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, blackberries, they are all delicious in this smoothie recipe.
Optional Ingredients
- Greens: If you would like to add greens to your berry smoothie, Use fresh kale or spinach. Just be sure to remove the hard stems of kale or spinach so that the greens break down easily in the blender.
- Ground Flax seed: This is a totally optional ingredient but it adds Omega Fatty Acids and additional fiber. Flax seed also is a healthy fat and in order to fully absorb nutrients from fruits and veggies, you need to pair them with fat.
- Yogurt: If you want to add calcium or protein to this Berry Smoothie, add up to ½ cup of plain Greek or regular yogurt to the berry smoothie before blending.
- Sweetener: I typically find the berries add plenty of sweetness to this smoothie, that no additional sweetener is needed, even for the kids! However, if needed, feel free to drizzle in some honey or maple syrup before blending.
∗ tips for making a mixed berry smoothie∗
- It is really important to remember to add the juice first to your blender. If you add in the berries and/or kale first, the blender's blades may get stuck on the solids and the smoothie will not be as smooth.
- Thin as needed. If you find your berries are not breaking down well in your blender, add in more juice 1 tablespoon at a time to help the smoothie come together.
- Serve immediately. The ingredients in this berry smoothie will begin to separate if not served after blending together.

Sounds delicious can diabetes have this drink?
Kristen Chidsey
Hi Angela! This is a hard question to answer. There is no added sugar, but you would want to pair this with protein just as you should a piece of fruit to keep your blood sugar stable. Hope that makes sense.

I remember blackberry season in Oregon. Buckets were literally free for the picking. It always makes me happy to come across a recipe that uses them. I am looking forward to starting this 12 Day GoodBelly Reboot tomorrow!! This smoothie will be in the rotation 🙂

I wish I lived in an area where blackberries were free 😉 But oh how I love them myself. Enjoy this smoothie!
