Notes on Ingredients and Equipment

- Sweet Potatoes: You can use any variety of sweet potatoes you like for this recipe. Purple sweet potatoes, Japanese sweet potatoes, or regular sweet potatoes all work with the timing provided. I look for sweet potatoes that are firm without much blemish or wrinkled skin.
- Oil: I do recommend using a small amount of oil, rather than simply using cooking spray. As for the type of oil, canola oil, olive oil, or avocado oil are all good choices for this recipe.
- Seasonings: The options for seasonings are endless for flavoring sweet potatoes and I share some of my favorite varieties below. You can keep it simple and season with kosher salt or seasoned salt. I personally love using a combination of salt, pepper, onion powder, garlic powder, and paprika, as it lends amazing flavor to the earthy sweet potatoes.
- Air Fryer: There are so many brands of air fryers on the market and each is vastly different, but all will work well with this recipe. I have a basic GoWise Air Fryer that has worked well for me for several years. If you have a compact air fryer, you may need to work in batches to not overcrowd the air fryer.
Seasoning Options
- Cinnamon Sugar: Toss the cubed sweet potatoes with ½ teaspoon oil, a pinch of salt, ½ tablespoon sugar, and ½ teaspoon cinnamon.
- Tex Mex: Toss sweet potatoes with ½ teaspoon oil and 2 teaspoons Taco Seasoning or Fajita Seasoning.
- Savory Onion: Toss sweet potatoes with ½ teaspoon oil and 2 teaspoons Copycat Lipton Onion Soup Mix.
- Cajun: Toss potatoes with ½ teaspoon oil and 2 teaspoons Homemade Cajun Seasoning.
- Low-Sodium/Salt-Free: Cut the salt to ¼ teaspoon OR omit completely if on a salt-free diet.
- Add Fresh Herbs: Toss the sweet potatoes with the oil, ½ teaspoon kosher salt, and ½ tablespoon minced fresh thyme leaves, or ½ tablespoon minced fresh rosemary.
Tips for Perfectly "Roasted" Air Fryer Sweet Potatoes
The following tips are provided to help you achieve perfect results. You will find the detailed instructions in the recipe card at the bottom of this post.
Cut into evenly sized cubes. You want the sweet potatoes cut into pieces that are all about the same time, as this will ensure they cook evenly.
Spread out the potatoes in the basket or tray of your air fryer. Just like when roasting sweet potatoes, it is best not to allow much overlap in the air fryer. This allows the sweet potato cubes to evenly cook and to develop a crispy exterior.

Flip Once. Midway through air-frying, you want to remove the basket of the air fryer, give the sweet potatoes a good shake, and return them to the air fryer. This will allow each side to become crispy and golden.

Storage and Reheating
- Refrigerate: Allow the sweet potatoes to cool slightly, transfer them to an airtight container, and store them in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
- Freeze: Allow the sweet potatoes to cool to room temperature. Place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and flash-freeze them for about 60 minutes. Transfer the frozen potatoes to a freezer-safe airtight container, and store them in the freezer for up to 3 months.
- Reheat: Whether frozen or refrigerated, it is best to reheat air fryer sweet potatoes in the air fryer to keep their crispy texture intact. Reheat at 350 degrees F for 3-4 minutes for refrigerated sweet potatoes, and 15 minutes for frozen, shaking halfway.
